Shek Kong Village in the New Territories, Hong Kong is a non-indigenous village. In 2009, due to the construction of the train stop siding and emergency rescue station of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, the Hong Kong SAR Government announced a comprehensive demolition plan in Tsoi Yuen Village. In addition to villagers refusing to relocate, the plans triggered a series of anti-express rail campaign. A group of post-80s initiated ascetics (kneeling once every 26 steps) at five geographical Legislative Council constituencies. They also organised the Village Ruins Festivals and had 10,000 people gathering around the Legislative Council. Eventually, the government approved the $66.9 billion funding for the Express Rail Link. The Village was demolished in 2010. With efforts of the villagers, they built a new village near Shek Kong, hoping to demonstrate the first low-carbon ecological village in Hong Kong. I used a 8×10 large format camera to shoot the Village Group Portrait Series. During the anti-demolition campaign, I pasted my enlarged works at houses no longer occupied, in order to encourage the oppressed villagers.
In front of the huge portraits, we understood that we should not dictate others’ fate. In the shallow landscape and deep field unique in the big negatives, the focus flows naturally to deep in the photographer’s eyes: the viewer, the photographer, and the subject meet at this point to comprehend each other. Now I practice photography in my daily life to fix my perspective on this world through different processes. I hope to understand that impermanence is the essence of this world. I hope to regard the “impermanence” as “eternity”, but not to justify the distorted ‘self’ due to impermanence, in order to reduce selfish thinking and behavior, and send blessings to all forms of life on the Earth.
